Peak District Highlights

The Peak District National Park became Britain's first National Park in 1951, many of the highlights of this wonderful area can be seen only a short distance from Bakewell. Below are a few examples:

Chatsworth House

Chatsworth is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, one of Britain's best loved stately homes. With famous works of art, a working farmyard, 100acres of beautiful landscape gardens and an award-winning farmshop it is a must see on a visit to the Peak District. It is only 10-15min drive away.

Haddon Hall

Only 5min drive from Bakewell is Haddon Hall. Haddon Hall is the finest example of a medieval manor house currently in existence in England. The oldest parts date from the 12th Century and it has been the location for a number of blockbuster films including Pride and Prejudice.

Ladybower Reservoir

A bit further away - 30min drive but beautiful and spectacular. These man-made reservoirs were used as practice for the wartime Dambusters raids.
Visitors to this scenic area will find waymarked walks, cycle routes, glorious wooded areas to wander, wildlife, and plenty of places to enjoy a picnic. There is also a visitor centre from which cycles may be hired.

Castleton Caverns

Castleton lies at the western end of the Hope Valley about 30min drive from Bakewell. There are four magnificent show caves - Peak Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Mine as well as wonderful scenery and walks.
